(Fort McMurray, AB, April 9, 2021) Due to the increase in COVID-19 cases at Fort McMurray Christian School, all grades ECDP to grade 9 will be shifting to online learning from April 12–16. Based on Alberta Health Services (AHS) confirmation and parent notification we currently have 69% staff and 126 students in quarantine between ECDP and Grade 9. Within the numbers confirmed by AHS, the variant of concern (UK) has been confirmed in one case.

“As these grades move to online learning, the school and Division staff will be able to work out technology-related logistics as needed for students. We are able to accommodate any students who cannot find childcare options. Staff not in isolation are able to remain in the building to access teaching materials,” Jennifer Turner, Superintendent, FMPSD said.

Alberta Health Services will continue to contact parents/guardians of students, as well as any staff who may have been in close contact with any newly identified cases. All students and staff in direct contact have already been notified (via phone/email) and will remain in isolation for the designated amount of time. If you have not received a phone call from the Christian School office your child(ren) is not affected.

We remind parents/guardians of students, as well as any staff member to monitor for any signs or symptoms of COVID-19. The Alberta Government, AHS and our school Division and administration are collectively committed to being as transparent as possible in terms of COVID -19 cases and as such we are sharing this information with our school community.

Additionally, as a reminder, if you/your child has any of the symptoms of illness listed on the Alberta Health daily checklist, please fill out the online Alberta Health Services COVID-19 Self-Assessment or call Health Link at 811 and stay home/keep your child at home.

Stay safe, everyone.

Division Notice

ATA Strike Commencing on Monday; School Closures Starting Oct 6th

As a result of the Alberta Teachers Association (ATA) rejecting a proposed deal from the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA), all FMPSD schools will be closed to students starting Monday, October 6, 2025, unless a new agreement is reached or strike action is otherwise averted. Additionally, all yellow school bus routes will be suspended for the duration of the strike.

In light of the ongoing strike, all extracurricular activities, including sports, clubs, and after-school programs, will be temporarily suspended.

As there is no definitive end date for the strike, FMPSD is unable to provide a timeline for when normal operations will resume. We will continue to provide timely updates as we receive them from the Ministry of Education and Child Care.
