ServeYMM 2025: A Weekend to Remember

What an incredible year for ServeYMM 2025! Over the course of one powerful weekend, more than 120 students and 40 dedicated volunteers came together to be the hands and feet of Jesus in Fort McMurray. From cleaning up our city streets to helping serve at the Rotary House, and building friendships across schools and churches, ServeYMM reminded us all what it means to live out our faith in action.

One of the standout moments was The Great Garbage Gathering, where students fanned out across the city with gloves, bags, and a mission. But they didn’t stop at cleanup. What started as garbage collection turned into a spontaneous Loose Parts Art Club, with students transforming litter into imaginative installations that caught the eye and sparked conversation. It was service and creativity in action.

Another meaningful part of the weekend was seeing former FMCS students return to lead. Some came back to serve as team leaders, others stepped in to help run events, and several were part of the ServeYMM band, using their gifts to lead worship and inspire the next generation. Their presence was a beautiful picture of full-circle faith formation; students who once were served, now stepping up to serve others.

We also want to make a special mention of Pastor Lucas from Fort City Church, whose words to the students were deeply impactful. With honesty and encouragement, he reminded us of Christ’s call to love one another and to be willing to say, “Here am I, send me.” His message was a powerful challenge to our youth—not just to serve during this one weekend, but to live lives marked by faith, courage, and compassion.

We want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who made this year possible. This kind of weekend doesn’t happen without countless moving parts behind the scenes—teachers, FMCS school staff, parents, donors, team leaders, project coordinators, BBQ grillers, workshop speakers, bus drivers, and prayer warriors. We see you. We appreciate you. And we thank God for you.

Each year, ServeYMM grows - not just in numbers, but in impact. We’re watching young people step into leadership, take initiative, serve with joy, and encounter Christ in fresh ways as they bless their community. It’s no small thing.

Check out the photo gallery below for some amazing highlights from this year’s events. The smiles, sweat, creativity, and kindness tell the real story.

On behalf of the planning team at Fort McMurray Christian School, thank you again for being part of this movement. Let’s keep being salt and light!

Division Notice

ATA Strike Commencing on Monday; School Closures Starting Oct 6th

As a result of the Alberta Teachers Association (ATA) rejecting a proposed deal from the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA), all FMPSD schools will be closed to students starting Monday, October 6, 2025, unless a new agreement is reached or strike action is otherwise averted. Additionally, all yellow school bus routes will be suspended for the duration of the strike.

In light of the ongoing strike, all extracurricular activities, including sports, clubs, and after-school programs, will be temporarily suspended.

As there is no definitive end date for the strike, FMPSD is unable to provide a timeline for when normal operations will resume. We will continue to provide timely updates as we receive them from the Ministry of Education and Child Care.
